The comparison

Start with the legal structure, not the subclass number.

Each visa has its own eligibility criteria. The summaries below are orientation points, not a decision that you qualify.

Points tested visas

SkillSelect is the beginning of the application sequence.

For subclasses 189, 190 and 491, an Expression of Interest is not a visa application. You need an invitation before lodging the relevant visa application.

Current published minimum threshold

65 points is a threshold, not an invitation.

The current published minimum points threshold for subclasses 189, 190 and 491 is 65 points. Reaching 65 points does not guarantee an invitation to apply. Invitation settings and state or territory criteria can change.

  • Use claims you can support with evidence
  • Check the relevant occupation list and assessing authority
  • Confirm the English evidence accepted for the pathway
  • Update an EOI if your circumstances change before invitation

Employer sponsored migration

When an Australian employer is part of the case.

A job offer alone does not grant sponsorship or a visa. The employer, nomination, occupation and applicant must meet the requirements for the nominated stream.

Subclass 482

Skills in Demand visa

Review sponsorship, nomination, nominated occupation, relevant work experience and English requirements where applicable. The Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams have different structures.

Subclass 186

Employer Nomination Scheme

Consider permanent employer sponsored migration through Direct Entry or Temporary Residence Transition where applicable. Occupation, registration and skills assessment requirements may apply.

Subclass 494

Regional employer sponsorship

Assess the designated regional area, employer nomination, nominated occupation and regional skilled employment. A possible subclass 191 pathway has its own requirements.

Skills assessment

The assessing authority depends on the occupation.

Do not assume one assessment authority applies to every profession. Review qualifications, transcripts, duties, employment references, payment evidence and professional registration against the relevant authority.

  • OccupationMatch actual duties where applicable
  • QualificationsPrepare awards and transcripts
  • EmploymentEvidence dates, duties and history
  • RegistrationCheck regulated profession requirements
