Common questions

Start with the part of the process you can evidence.

FAQ content is a starting point for research, not a finding that a person qualifies for a visa.

Can I submit a SkillSelect EOI from Hong Kong?

Eligible applicants may submit an EOI from inside or outside Australia. An EOI is not a visa application and does not provide a right to remain in Australia while you wait.

Do I need a skills assessment before submitting an EOI?

Timing depends on the occupation and pathway, but the skills assessment should be treated as an early requirement. Confirm the assessing authority and evidence it requires before making claims in SkillSelect.

What is the difference between subclass 189 and subclass 190 for a Hong Kong professional?

Subclass 189 is a points tested independent visa. Subclass 190 is a permanent visa that requires state or territory nomination. Both use SkillSelect and an invitation process.

How does state nomination work for subclass 190?

You submit an EOI and may seek nomination from a state or territory. Each jurisdiction sets its own criteria, so its current government instructions must be checked.

Can an Australian employer sponsor me under subclass 482?

An Australian employer may be able to sponsor a skilled worker if the employer, nomination, occupation and applicant meet the Skills in Demand requirements. A job offer alone does not guarantee sponsorship or a grant.

What is a CoE for an Australian Student visa?

A Confirmation of Enrolment is evidence of enrolment in a CRICOS registered course. It supports a subclass 500 application but does not guarantee a visa grant.

What should a Hong Kong applicant include in Genuine Student responses?

Use real details about current circumstances, the course and provider choice, proposed study, previous education, employment, economic circumstances and immigration history. Attach evidence that supports the facts.

Does studying in Australia guarantee permanent residence?

No. A Student visa or Australian qualification does not guarantee permanent residence. A later subclass 485, skilled or employer sponsored application must meet the requirements in force at that time.
